The other day, someone asked me why we sometimes pick up so many negative vibes from the world and how we can stay positive. I immediately thought of sharing my blog on Optimism and how it can really boost our happiness. Then, I came across this article and thought it had a really interesting point: How can Optimism help us keep our sanity?
Optimism—the wonderful belief in positive outcomes and focusing on the bright side of life—is a powerful force that can really boost our well-being. It supports us in overcoming challenges, building resilience, and fostering warm, positive relationships.
Here is my Guide:
How can we cultivate Optimism?
Take a moment to reflect on and gently challenge your Negative Thoughts. Stay in tune with your feelings and notice quickly when pessimism starts to creep in about the world around you. Remember that it’s okay to feel small in the face of significant issues like war, global warming, political disagreements, and an unstable economy. Recognizing your feelings is the first step towards understanding and growth.
· Are you a pessimist? How do pessimists think? Pessimistic thinking differs from optimistic thinking in three aspects: Let us look at the context of the current USA climate:
1. Permanence (Bad times are forever): Countries experience both good and bad periods. The United States has faced numerous challenges and has emerged stronger each time.
2. Personalization (bad things happen only to me, or I am to blame): This isn’t your fault. Things are arranged this way. The world is chaotic, and we can’t grasp the entire process.
3. Pervasiveness (just because I struggle with one thing doesn’t mean I will fail at everything). No, the USA does not suck. We still have an excellent economy, know-how, the greatest democracy, and the courage of the people to make change.
· Give Yourself Credit: Realistic self-compassion and self-praise are essential. The USA remains a world leader, having achieved numerous milestones and emerged from two world wars and economic crises.
· Celebrate small victories. Look for the good happening around you. Read some positive stories and use them as fertilizer.
· Think of Positive Past Events. Remember when you thought things wouldn’t work out, but in the end, they did, and you gained valuable experience.
· Stay connected with like-minded, optimistic people who think like you, are calm, and do not cause unnecessary anxiety. Take care of your most valuable assets: your family and friends. Some may challenge you, but you need to recognize their value in your life and whether it is worth tolerating them.
· Minimize the Negative and focus on mindfulness and gratitude.
While Optimism is generally beneficial, it’s essential to maintain balance. Unrealistic Optimism, also known as optimism bias, can result in overconfidence, risk-taking, and difficulty accepting failure.
