Suicide Rate by States of the USA

Over time, suicide rates have shown troubling trends. Between 2000 and 2018, rates rose by 37%. In 2024 alone, around 49,000 people died by suicide across the USA, equivalent to one death every 11 minutes.

Alaska has the highest suicide rate (due to high death rates in native americans all over the country), while New Jersey has the lowest. The rate of suicide is higher in the Midwest and the Plains. ‘Surely we know that firearms account for >50%, but suffocation comes distant second at 24% and poisoning at 9%

  • The global total of suicide deaths decreased from an estimated 762,000 in 2000 to 717,000 in 2021, which is 9.1 deaths per 100,000 population
  • In 2021, the global rate of suicide deaths for men was 12.3 per 100,000, more than double the rate for women, which stood at 5.9 per 100,000 population.
  • According to a 2012 WHO study, the highest death rates are in Greenland, Latvia, South Korea, and Guyana. However, a 2025 study pointed to the highest rate in Lesotho. 6/10 countries were in Africa. Greenland was not studied. In 2023, suicide accounted for 7.4% of all deaths in Greenland at 72/10000 people.
  • Usually Eastern Europe and Russia have high male suicide rates
  • 35% of all female suicides happen in India.
